Criminals carried out a port-out scam, moving a retired couple’s home telephone number to a device they controlled. Before the victims understood why their landline had stopped working, the attackers used control of the number to obtain a cash advance of nearly $5,000.
Fraudsters are spoofing Mobile Police Department telephone numbers so incoming calls appear official. The callers demand payment of supposed fines, although legitimate officers never collect money by phone. Residents are advised to hang up immediately and notify the department independently.
